I am trying to use TFTP with U-Boot to download the zImage file from my laptop (running Ubuntu 18.04) however somewhere during the transfer of the file it always times out. I am able to ping my laptop from U-Boot successfully every time and the device tree blob is successfully downloaded every time.

I've modified the dm9000x.c line 433, change tmo = get_timer (0) + 5 * CONFIG_SYS_HZ; // into tmo = get_timer (0) + 200; //timeout 200 miliiseconds The translation time is now endurable. But it still many transmission timeout, the logs show below
This done with the -p switch. I'm not sure if you will be able to do a recursive file listing with this ftp-client. ls -R in my case just gave the list of files and directories in the current working dir.
